Metal Roof Hail Damage: Cosmetic or Functional?

Hail almost always leaves marks on a metal roof. The hard question is whether those marks changed how the roof sheds water or how long it will last. That question decides a lot of metal roof claims, and it's usually where appraisers end up apart. Snow Consulting is run by an experienced roof consultant with over 30 years on roofs who has worked with every metal roof profile, from standing seam to through-fastened R-panel and PBR.

Why "it's only dents" doesn't end the discussion

Cosmetic damage changes how a roof looks. Functional damage reduces its ability to keep water out or shortens its service life. Many policies exclude cosmetic damage to metal roofs by endorsement, so the difference can decide the whole claim. Texas courts have treated the cosmetic-versus-functional question as a fact question that turns on expert evidence, not on a photo of a dent. We don't give coverage or legal opinions. We document the roof so whoever decides the question has the facts.

What we check on a hail-hit metal roof

  • Panel surface and coating: whether the paint or metallic coating is cracked, crazed or broken at the impact, and whether any corrosion has started.
  • Seams and laps: standing seams that were deformed or opened, and lap joints on through-fastened panels that no longer sit tight.
  • Fasteners and clips: exposed screws whose washers were hit or crushed, and fasteners that backed out or loosened.
  • Panel profile: ribs that were flattened or kinked, and any change in how water runs off the panel.
  • Trim, flashings and soft metals: ridge caps, gutters, vents and rooftop units. These help confirm hail size and direction for the storm date in question.
  • Water entry: drone thermal scans and moisture checks below the deck when there are leak reports.

Standing seam vs. R-panel and PBR

Standing seam roofs hide their fasteners, so the evidence is usually at the seams, the clips and the panel flats. Through-fastened R-panel and PBR roofs have thousands of exposed screws and laps, so the evidence is often at the fasteners and the side laps. A report that treats every metal roof the same tends to miss one or the other.

Repairability and matching

Even when damage is limited, panels have to be replaced with the same profile, gauge and color, and they have to tie in properly. We note whether the profile is still made, whether the color still matches after years of weathering, and whether a repair can be done without disturbing the panels around it.

Frequently asked questions

Are hail dents on a metal roof covered?

That depends on your policy and any cosmetic damage endorsement. We don't interpret coverage; we document the physical damage so the people who do have the facts.

Can a dented metal roof leak?

It can when hail breaks the coating, opens a seam or lap, or damages fastener washers. Dents alone don't always cause leaks, which is why the details matter.

Can you tell which storm caused the dents?

Often we can narrow it down using soft metals, oxidation inside the marks and storm records. See dating hail damage.

Do you inspect residential metal roofs?

Yes, in Texas and Oklahoma.

Do you use drones?

Yes. We use drone inspections and drone thermal scans.
